about

Inspiration is an unusual thing. There are times when it almost seems to be flowing out of you and you don't know where the spigot is to turn it off. Other times, it's like a slow drip, with each new part slowing coming and you are wracking your brains on how to make it go faster.

This album was the result of Commute Home. Almost as soon as I finished releasing Commute Home I had more ideas to try and it just grew from there. One idea led to another and before I knew it, it was all here.

---

There's something almost zen and meditative about working with modular synthesizers (even fully digital ones). For me it is always about the journey to discovering something that speaks to me, not even necessarily something fully musical. The session almost always starts with a set of modules and me saying to myself, "What if I hooked these two things up?". From there it's as if the patch grows itself, I'm just following an unmarked trail that is obvious but unseen. It's felt, not found.

---

It might all seem random and I would admit, yes, there's some random bits in there. But when you interface a human and a machine, interesting things happen. Humans create order out of the chaos that we tell the machine to make. It's the strangest dichotomy of humans as chaotic instigator and creator of order. But sometimes it doesn't even seem like creation. It seems like discovery sometimes, like it was always there and I just happened to stumble upon it. Or it's a gift given to me. Or my hands are being moved by something larger than myself.

It's funny sometimes, you'll finish a project, show it off to people, and somehow that kicks off the inspiration all over again! So here's to all of you inspiring people, in no particular order:

- Thanks to my family for always telling me to keep on making music and putting up with the weird bleeps and bloops.
- Thanks to The Midlife Synthesist for being just an awesome person who keeps showing that anyone can make good music. But even more, your desire to build people up is the greatest gift you've given.
- All the fun musicians/hobbists/tinkerers on the Midlife Synthesist Discord, you people make making music fun!
- My wife for being my biggest fan, this wouldn't exist otherwise!
